This 3-month course provides foundation general computing and employment skills that enables you to participate effectively in an information technology environment in any industry. This Certificate is an entry requirement for all other UPC IT programs. A short course or skills test called "Operate a Personal Computer" is the entry requirements for this course.

This 9 month course begins the journey to become a Networking Technician. You will learn to build and install operating systems, in particular Linux and Windows and learn to be an effective team member.

This one year course continues your development into a skilled networking hardware specialist. You will learn to work in specialist IT teams managing complex projects for networks that support E-business, websites and organisations.

This course provides foundation general computing and employment skills that enable participation in an information technology environment in any industry. This qualification builds from introductory skills and knowledge in information technology and data communications. Certificate II in Information Technology provides the foundation IT skills and knowledge for an individual to be an effective IT user or employee.

Operate a Personal Computer is the entry requirements for this course. You must complete a short course and/or skills test at our College IT rooms to demonstrate your basic skills. For overseas students this can be studied prior to starting the course and the skills test is done in Orientation.

    Description

    This qualification develops skills and knowledge in the installation and management of simple networks and provides for an individual to be effective in network management either as an independent ICT specialist or as part of a team. This program builds from introductory skills and knowledge in information technology and data communications. You learn to build and install operating systems, in particular Linux and Windows. You will install and manage simple networks and be an effective team member as a skilled hardware specialist.

    Description
    This qualification provides the skills and knowledge in high level LAN and WAN network design, installation and system management. You will learn to work in specialist IT teams managing complex projects for networks that support E-business, websites and general business operations.

    Study for 3 months in the Certificate II in Information Technology that includes pre-requisite subjects in essential networking and administration fundamentals. Then move on to the Diploma level
    subjects for 12 months advanced network training.

    General Course Information

    All the UPC IT courses are offered in afternoon and evening classes that suit students who combine work with study.

    Entry for Local students

    Entry requirement is a NSW school certificate (year 10) or equivalent.

    Entry for Overseas students

    Education: The Higher School Certificate (HSC) or an equivalent Senior Secondary School completion is required. Overseas students will be checked for criminal records and Prohibited Employment regulations as part of their student visa application..

    English Language Proficiency for overseas students: IELTS (International English Language Testing System) proficiency level of 5.5 or above. If English is not to 5.5 level, then completion of 10 weeks or more of English up to the Intermediate level at UPC can be arranged.

    Course Structure and Assessment

    The IT courses are structured around four 9-week terms (36 weeks per calendar year). Typically, you complete 2-3 Subjects per term. These Subjects are completed in a combination of classroom lectures and practicals.

    Assessment is competency-based which means you will show your knowledge through completion of written exercises and exams. Your technical skills and your communication skills are tested through demonstrations and observations reports and projects during the course.

    Attending Classes at the College

    You attend the courses from 4.30pm to 9.00pm Monday to Friday each week (excluding term breaks). A total of 20 hours per week is timetabled for every week.

    Extra tuition in English to help with students understanding of technology and networking terminology.

    The College is aware that some student are studying in English as their second language. We also know that the language used to describe the IT work environment is quite technical and academic. As part of the course our subjects include extra time on the language and terms specific to IT and Networking.

    At Diploma level students are working towards an English level equivalent to IELTS 6.5 or higher to gain employment in the IT industry and membership of the Australian Computer Society. (ACS). They will also be studying to articulate to University.

    Skills Recognition:

    If you have work experience or life experience and can document and demonstrate that this experience, then you may be eligible for skills recognition. This may reduce the length of your course. Please discuss this with our staff prior to enrolment. Overseas students who gain recognition will have their course length and student visa duration reduced and course fees may be adjusted.

    Articulation, Credit Transfers and Learning Pathways:

    UPC Diploma graduates in Information Technology will be working towards achieving English at IELTS 6.5 academic. You can continue studies in Computing Professional courses in the second year of a related undergraduate program at most Australian Universities, provided you meet all the University's requirements.
