A combination of these courses will form a Pre-Foundation program which is the basic for the pathway to Foundation Year at the University of New South Wales

Pre-Foundation Program English for Pre-Foundation Studies (EPFS - CRICOS No. 057692G) Lower to intermediate level

This is a basic starting point that teaches everyday English. You progress through the English for Pre-Foundation Studies course as you successfully complete each level. However, you may also repeat a level if you are not ready to progress to improve your English proficiency. That is why the weeks are shown from 1 week to 40 weeks. Each student works at their own speed and moves forward when the assessments are satisfactory. Some students will move very quickly through this General English program which covers Everyday English with emphasis on all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. See English for Pre-Foundation Studies

English for Academic Purpose (EAP - CRICOS No. 057693F) Upper Intermediate Level.

This is a preparation course for further study. We expect that most UPC students will complete at least 10 weeks of the EAP course. Whilst you may be academically excellent in your subject area, you will need to learn how to read, write, listen and speak in an Australian college or university environment and for everyday use while you are in Australia. Many overseas students find that the lectures, tutorials, homework, essay writing and exams are conducted in a different way from their home country. The EAP course will increase your vocabulary and teach research and writing skills for further academic study. The EAP courses can be taken as part of our Pre-Foundation Program designed specifically to flow into the University of New South Wales Foundation Year. See English for Academic Purposes

Preparation for IELTS (CRICOS No. 057964E) - Advanced level

This is a course of study that focuses on preparation for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). As a guide, you need an IELTS score of 5.5 for study for a diploma or advanced diploma, and from 6.0 to 6.5 (academic) for entrance to a university degree program. Students with a good IELTS score have a wide range of further study options to choose from. We offer individual intensive IELTS preparation at UPC to meet external IELTS examination dates and entry cut offs for colleges and universities. Most students enrol for at least 10 weeks of intensive study but you can pace your study to suit your needs and tertiary entry dates. See Preparation for IELTS

English for Specific Purposes (ESP - Advanced level) - There are 3 parallel streams

  • English for Technology (CRICOS No. 057695D)
  • English for Business (CRICOS No.057697B)
  • English for Science (CRICOS No. 057696C)

These courses vary from 10, 20 to 30 weeks depending on your school results. They again, prepare students for tertiary study through specific English teaching in academic reading, writing, speaking and listening at an Advanced level (higher than the EAP course). These advanced courses provide additional content in Business, Economics, Computers, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. (Each course contains three of these subjects). The ESP courses are part of our Pre-Foundation Program designed specifically to flow into the University of New South Wales Foundation Year (see below for details).
