UPC Business Program
Accounting Courses
University Preparation College (UPC) offers courses in Book-keeping and Accounting at the Certificate III and Diploma Levels. Our courses are nationally recognised qualifications through the Australian Government's Vocational Education and Training Advisory Board (VETAB) of New South Wales.
Our courses are
registered CRICOS courses for overseas students.
The UPC Accounting courses
are designed to maximise both the academic and professional pursuits of
students by creating pathways to employment opportunities and further
education at university.
There is a demand
for skilled people in Business and Accounting
There is a demand
for skilled accounts people in all types of Australian business – from
small business to corporate companies. Students with a second language and
knowledge of Australian business and tax arrangements are valued in many
businesses that deal with overseas branches or customers with limited English
language.
General Course Information
All the UPC Accounting courses are offered at our
College in a mix of evening and daytime classes that suit students who combine working and studying. The
Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) is offered as a 6
month full time course.
Exit at this
point and you will be qualified to work as:
Accountants payable
Accounts receivable
Payroll clerk
Cashier
Bookkeeper
The Diploma
of Accounting is offered as a combined course over 1 year for overseas students.
Exit at this point and you will be qualified to work as:
Accountant in a small business
Finance manager
Senior financial clerk
Audit clerk
Tax clerk
Cost clerk
Bookkeeper
Students enrolling in the full
1 year Diploma course may progress to further study with advanced
standing in a university degree.
Entry requirements
All Accounting courses commence with entry subjects at Certificate III level and
progress through to the chosen exit point. So the entry requirements are the
same for each course.
Entry for Local
students:
Education – The Higher School Certificate (HSC) or an equivalent
Senior Secondary School completion.
Entry for
Overseas students:
Education - The Higher School Certificate (HSC) or an equivalent Senior
Secondary School completion.
English Language Proficiency- Successful completion of English for
Business and IT at UPC or successful completion of 10 weeks of English at the
Intermediate level at UPC or IELTS (International English Language Testing
System) proficiency level of 5.5 or above.
Course Structure and Assessment
The Accounting courses
are structured around four 9-week terms (36 weeks per calendar year).
Typically, you would complete 2 - 3 subjects per term, depending on the
electives. These subjects are completed via a combination of lecture and
tutorials. Assessment is competency-based and varies
from one subject to another but will include case studies, knowledge tests and
exams and practical accounting project work.
Course Content
The core Subjects
for Accounting focus on areas such as business communication and practice, Computerised
Accounting,
Financial Services Professional Practice,
Company Financial Management,
Corporate Governanceand Tax Planning.
A student with no
previous training or experience can enrol in the full year program and progress
through the subjects, starting at entry level and pre-requisites through to
Diploma. The list of Subjects at each level is shown
below.
Attend classes at the College
You attend this course during the day for Cert III between 8.30 - 4.30pm and for Diploma a day/night
combination, 8.30 - 4.30 and 4.45 -9pm.
The lecture and tutorial times will vary depending on the subjects.
Recognition
Student who have
successfully completed any units of these qualifications at an other RTO or
through other forms of formal study or overseas qualifications may be eligible
for recognition in our courses. Please discuss this with our staff prior to
enrolment.
Successful
recognition may result in a shorter course with advanced standing for some
subjects.
Skills Recognition
If you have work experience or life experience and can document and
demonstrate that this experience means you have knowledge and skills that meet
the competencies in our course subjects, then you may be eligible for skills
recognition. This may reduce the length of your course. Please discuss this
with our staff prior to enrolment.
Overseas students
that gain recognition will have their course length and student visa duration
reduced and course fees may be adjusted.

Articulation, Credit Transfers and
Learning Pathways
UPC Diploma graduates in Accounting can continue their studies
in Finance accounting, commerce or business courses in the second year of a
related undergraduate program at most Australian Universities, provided they
meet all the University's requirements. If you are interested in this pathway,

The Diploma
of Accounting course will provide you with practical training in the accounting
discipline.
The program
is based upon the principles of competency-based assessment and flexible
delivery, offering participants greater flexibility to enter into, progress
through, and exit from the program in a manner that suits their needs.
In this course you will learn how to perform
